What is the BIVB?

The Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB) is a professional organization that brings together winegrowers, cooperative suppliers and négociants-éleveurs in the Bourgogne region. It is managed by elected industry representatives, is recognized by the French state and is subject to state economic and financial controls. It covers all Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the Bourgogne region. The BIVB prides itself on its principles of parity, unanimity and representativeness.

Missions

  • - To represent and defend the interests of Bourgogne wines, winegrowers and négociants
  • - To define the technical, economic and communication strategies of Bourgogne wines
  • - To drive initiatives to further these strategies

 

 

Organization

The BIVB is organized into three departments:

The Technical and Quality Department whose aim is to improve the quality of Bourgogne wines while promoting cultivation techniques that respect the environment, and to give industry professionals a helping hand to reach these objectives.

The Markets and Development Department is there to better understand the various markets for Bourgogne wines and to hone the organization’s communication strategy while helping members develop successful sales strategies.

The Marketing and Communication Department ensures the promotion of Bourgogne wines both in France and abroad. It helps industries to market Bourgogne wines and helps consumers better understand and appreciate them.

 

 

Resources

Industry professionals pay a subscription to the BIVB that is based on their own wine sales, volumes of juice produced and grapes harvested, and calculated pro rata depending on the category of appellation. Its annual global budget is around 10 million euros.

 

History

  • 1960A law is passed to create the “Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne et de Mâcon” for the Saône-et-Loire (71) department
  • 1966A law is passed to create the “Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne et de Mâcon” for the Côte-d'Or (21) and Yonne (89) departments
  • 1973Creation of the École des Vins de Bourgogne, one of the first professional wine schools in France
  • 1976-1989Consolidation of a regional inter-professional organization
  • 1989The Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne or Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB) is created on 24 July to replace the existing organizations
  • 1991-1994Creation of Maisons des Vins in Chablis and Mâcon
  • 2000: Creation of a laboratory for analysis and the Centre Œnologique de Bourgogne oenological center in Beaune
